Our History

The company was founded by Morgan T. Vowles, a bachelor who was born in 1941 and raised in a small mining village in the Valleys called Trehafod. Prior to establishing the firm, Morgan pursued a career in mechanical engineering. During this time, he worked at a garage where the owner had a fleet of funeral cars. From time to time, Morgan would help with driving these vehicles amongst other duties.

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s Morgan started a local taxi and carriage masters service in Trehafod, Pontypridd. He owned a fleet of limousines and a hearse, so this led to him being asked to arrange funeral services for local bereaved families. In 1971, he converted the old doctor’s surgery next door into a Private Chapel of Rest.

The funeral directing business flourished through the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s alongside his undertakers carriage hire, taxi service, wedding car hire service and garage repair workshop.

In 1994, Geraint Llewelyn, Morgan’s nephew, joined the company. During his first two to three years, Geraint attended the Lear College of Mortuary Services in Kingston-Upon-Thames in London. While studying, he worked for a large corporation of funeral directors and learned his trade as an embalmer.

In 1996, Geraint graduated and has developed the business into what it is today. He is now responsible for the day to day running of the firm, with Morgan T Vowles as an adviser by his side.

2002 saw Morgan and Geraint acquire an old and well established memorial masonry company based in Trelaw, Porth. Formerly known as Griffith Evan & Son, then Heritage memorials, upon acquisition the company name was changed to Griffith Memorials. The business remains part of the firm, supplying and fitting bespoke memorials, inscriptions and grave renovations across the UK.

In 2004, the company acquired R.M. & G.M. Edwards, a local funeral director in Pontyclun. When Mr Edwards retired, the company was purchased from the family and the name was changed to Pontyclun Funeral Services. This branch was subsequently refurbished into a modern and comfortable funeral home. This newly refurbished branch meant we could begin to support families throughout the Vale of Glamorgan, Cowbridge, Pontyclun, Llanharry, Bryanna, Llantrisant, Beddau, Llantwit Fadre, Tonyrefail, Efalisaf, Groesfaen, Cardiff and all the surrounding areas.

Between 2006 and 2007, we acquired a large premises next door to our funeral home in Trehafod. Throughout 2008 the premises was refurbished and modernised to include offices, arranging rooms, viewing rooms, a chapel of rest and state-of-the-art mortuary facilities. The development of this branch meant we could employ more staff and provide support to bereaved families in the communities of Trehafod, Llwyncelyn, Trebanog, Porth, Pontypridd, Hopkinstown, Graigwen and all the surrounding areas.

In 2019, we acquired Parc/Seren Funeral Home in Pontypridd. This was rebranded to become a branch for Morgan T Vowles Funeral Directors.

Humphreys Funeral Home in Porth is the latest funeral directors to join the firm. Morgan T Vowles acquired the funeral directors in February 2020 following the retirement of its former directors.

Today, our independent funeral directors serve many bereaved families across the South Wales Valleys and we are privileged to be entrusted with this honour.
